I thought this was an awesome video to help women with natural hair figure out if they need to drop their man or give him a chance to understand your hair choices.

Vida Starr LSB Product Review: Shea Moisture Purificication Masque
September 4th, 2011
Vida Starr
After being sober for about 6 or so months, I finally relapsed and gave into my inner junky… I had a huge product haul. And of course while I’m on twitter, I come across Elle Pixie from Quest for the Perfect Curl’s link to her post “My Absolute Favorite Natural Hair Products! (Holiest of the Holy Grails).” This was all the product junky in me needed to come out of hiding. I purchased this product at Wal-Greens for about $11. They didn’t have it at my local Target. I was pissed to have to pay over a $1 more than I would have had to pay at Target but what can you do?
After cleansing my hair using SheaMoisture Moisturizing Shampoo and rinsing it out thoroughly, I applied the Purification Masque. Now most of the time I use and rinse out a conditioner before applying a deep treatment of any kind but I really wanted to see the effects of the purification masque. As soon as I applied this masque I instantly fell in love. It spread so easily through my hair. It smelled like banana to me. I like that smell so I enjoyed it. After I applied it, I covered my hair in a plastic bag and tied it tightly. I left my hair with the masque covered for about 30 minutes. I rinsed out the deep conditioner and my hair was so amazingly smooth and soft. I was shocked. The only time I had results from a product like this was when I used Jessicurl Weekly Deep Treatment. Anyone who has seen my review of that product knows how much I love it. But what makes the SheaMoisture Purification Masque better is the cost and the availability. You can get it at Wal-Greens for about $11. Target sells SheaMoisture products for about $9.99 but I’m not sure if they have the Purification Masque yet.
Overall Rating: A+ I am highly impressed with this product. Most products that are available on the ground are not this effective nor do they have great ingredients like this product does. I would recommend this product to anyone in need of a deep treatment that is low Cost, Petroleum free, and easily accessible.
#TeamLightSkin Vs #TeamDarkSkin? It’s 2011 yall!!
April 2nd, 2011
Vida Starr So if you thought that Colorism/Shadeism went out with the 80′s… you’re wrong. Apparently there are still some very strong opinions on Blackness in regards to skin tone and even between nationalities and ethnicities. All we know is that it’s not “Politically Correct” to talk about it openly, but there are still these internal feelings that are expressed.
If you think this video is some rare thing… Peep the following Twitter Hash Tag posts:

But there is no #TeamLightSkin or #TeamDarkskin. I’m not one of these “Eracism” people that believe that we should all be one homogeneous group without separate cultures or identities. But it pains me to see black people hate their brothers and sisters based on their skin tone and the preconceived notions that they have developed about each other. It’s sad and scary. Scary because we still feel the need to have these hierarchies among ourselves. This need to feel better than (or sometimes less than) the next person. We come in different shades, come from different countries, and we are all beautiful.
WAM! Conference Has Sparked New Motivation!
March 27th, 2011
Vida Starr
Yesterday I went to this AMAZING Conference by Women, Action & The Media and I had an AMAZING time! There were great presentations and all of them were not only informative in regards to women’s presentation in the media and the affects on women and girls in real life but inspirational on how we can change them. I hope to be apart of the network of bloggers, professors, writers, students, film makers etc… that are working to change (and counter) many of the negative images and messages about women and our bodies that we are being fed today in the mainstream media.
I know this is normally a beauty blog about natural hair care, but if you read the “About” section, you will find that this blog is and always has been bigger than hair. I want to include more information on body image in all aspects not just hair and skin but all aspects. Thank you to Melanie Klein who has definitely inspired me through her organization of the WAM! LA conference and I am so happy to have been able to be in attendance! I am also gonna add some of the feminist blogs that I have learned about at the conference to the list of blog links to the right. The blogs will include:
FeministFatale.com
www.ClaireMysko.com (Claire Mysko is an EXCELLENT presenter and author of the book “Does this Pregnancy Make me Look Fat?” a book that I will definitely purchase btw!)
As I learn about others I will definitely post them up!!
Hair Slump: I’m Styleless and need a Stylist!!
January 15th, 2011
Vida Starr So Some of you I’m sure are wondering why I haven’t been posting…. Good question. I don’t really know myself really. I’ve been in somewhat of a hair slump. I’ve been saddened by the fact that I don’t know how to do do many hair styles. I know how to do braid/twist outs and wash n Go’s…. that’s about it. I’m not very skilled at flat twists or cornrows…. hell even parting!! I’m great at caring for my hair and making sure it gets what it needs…. but styling is a whole different story. I went online and looked up some hairstyles that I’d like to have one day… if I can find a stylist to do them (low cost though cuz I aint rich!).

Maybe one day I can learn these styles… I really doubt it though… I just don’t think I’m a patient and talented enough person to do it. But I really do want to find a stylist here in L.A. that can help me out!
LSB Recipe: Curly Pudding (Shae’s Pudding)
November 30th, 2010
Vida Starr Ok first and foremost I have to give a big shout out to @A_TypicalGirl on twitter who posted on her blog this great recipe that she got from Naturally Curly and Mixology101.ning.com.
Shawnette (Shae) created this cool and low cost recipe for a curly pudding. No more paying ridiculous prices for curly pudding by OTHER brands (I won’t name names but there is one particular company that comes to mind. The image is a subtle hint) because now you can whip this up for yourself using ingredients you may already have in your PJ stash!

The Recipe:
1 20oz jar IC Hair Polisher Styling Gel – $3.99 (I used the Olive. Smells yummy!)
4oz Unrefined Raw Shea Butter – $5.99 for 16oz
1oz Extra Virgin Olive Oil – $3.50
Using a hand blender or food processor, whip the shea butter. Add the olive oil and while still mixing, add the styling gel a little at a time. Continue to whip until smooth.
@A_TypicalGirl added a couple more ingredients to her batch. You can see her exact recipe and her results on her site www.atypicalgirl.onsugar.com

Lighter Skin is Better Skin
November 13th, 2010
Vida Starr This is an excellent short documentary on Shadeism and how it is effecting people from many different cultures and ethnicities. It doesn’t go as deep as I would have liked, but it has opened the door for the discussion which I think is excellent.

Here are some typical commercials shown in different parts of South East Asia for skin bleaching cream:
Skin bleaching creams don’t just target women… they target men as well…
You can go on Youtube and see many more of these ads. There were so many to choose from to post.
What do you think about these ads and ads like these?
